Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a yellow spice with a warm and mellow flavour native to India and Southeast Asia. It is the root of a perennial, herbaceous plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), traditionally grown in India for the last 5000 years. It has gained popularity as an aromatic spice, food colouring agent, natural dye and a medicine.
India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world. Indian turmeric is considered to be the best in the world market because of its high Curcumin and Oleoresin content. India accounts for about 80% of world turmeric production and 60% of world exports to Middle-East, UK, USA and Japan among other countries.
The crop is grown in India in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala and fresh produce is available from late December to May.
